Tips and FAQs

Not sure where to start with your move? Some tips can help.

Moving can be a huge process that requires a lot of time, energy, and effort. It’s not always easy to even know where to begin, but remembering a few tips can help. Every move is different, and at Austin Mobile Storage we strive to make your move as easy and painless as possible. But, if you’re planning a move or even just putting some of your property into storage to make some room in your home, there are several tips that simply can’t be ignored. Here are some of the main ones to remember.

Make a list and label boxes

It seems like a step you can skip, but the reality is that what goes into boxes and storage will eventually have to come out. If you make a list of what you're packing and take the time to label boxes, you can find what you want later more easily - and pack items more efficiently and safely.

Set important items aside

If you're packing very important items, set them aside until last. This way you can pack them last, near the doors, so they can be accessed again more readily. Plus, you can pack them more safely with less risk of damage.

Pack furniture contents in boxes

Furniture can usually be packed on its own. But what if it's a desk or dresser? Take the items inside out and pack in labeled boxes. It will lighten the furniture and help you keep track of everything later.

Use the appropriate box size

Everything has its own need, and making sure to pack items in the right box is important. Too small and the item can be damaged. A box too large, and it may mean that items shake or that the box collapses.

Be generous with packing paper & bubble wrap

It's important not to skimp on these two things since they're keeping your belongings safe and secure. Use lots of bubble wrap and packing paper to ensure that your items don't get damaged. The extra cost and effort is worth it.

Use plenty of packing tape

Just as you need to use bubble wrap and packing paper, don't ignore the packing tape, either. IT will keep boxes closed and items secure and safe throughout the storage or moving process.

Cover furniture

Covering furniture ensures that it isn't damaged in any way during the move, protecting it from scratches, scuffs, and other problems. Blankets are great for covering up your furniture, but packing tape can be used as well.

Loading Your Container

Heavy First

Always place the heaviest items and boxes on the bottom and place lighter boxes on top

Lighter items on Large items

Use dressers, cabinets, couches, and other furniture as a foundation to stack smaller, lighter items on

Weight Distribution

Distribute the weight of the load evenly across the entire container to avoid slippage or sliding

Wrap your furniture

Always cover furniture with moving blankets or bubble wrap to avoid damaging it in any way

Medium boxes in the center

Load middle-sized or middleweight boxes and furniture in the center of the stacks when possible

Fill in the Gaps with smaller items

Fill gaps throughout the loading process with light furniture and boxes. Think of it like Tetris!
